The Impact Technology Revolution is Here, and It’s Creating Millions of New Jobs
Are you burned out from your job and sick and tired of hearing about the many social and environmental challenges plaguing our planet? Are you nervous about artificial intelligence and technological unemployment sending workers and the economy into a tailspin?
If so, you are not alone. Millions of people around the world feel the same way. Yet, this is only part of the story. Over the last decade, hundreds of thousands of new startups, companies, and organizations have emerged, creating millions of new jobs that are saving the world and paying workers well. Until now, these jobs with impact technology companies have largely flown under the radar as no one has been tracking them in a formal way.
What are impact technology companies? Impact technology companies are using advanced technologies to solve our world’s biggest social and environmental problems. You have likely heard references to them before - they are working in Climate Tech, Ed Tech, Health Tech, Gov Tech, Ag Tech and more.
If you’re working for an impact technology company, you might be managing a fleet of robots growing food in ways better for the environment or using satellite data to help cities prepare for a natural disaster. You might be helping kids living in refugee camps access a world-class education through online learning and games, using artificial intelligence to create inspiring stories and films about social issues, or building electric ships, planes, and cars producing less emissions and pollution. You might be curing horrific diseases with data science, training healthcare workers in low-income communities, or even using gigantic robots with 3D printers to build affordable housing. While we know that the clean energy sector has created over 30 million jobs globally (International Energy Agency), we have less information on new jobs in other sectors, such as Ed Tech, Ag Tech, or Health Tech, although we know there are now hundreds of thousands of startups collectively operating in these areas, some of them unicorn companies.
Importantly, impact technology companies are not simply green-washing or practicing corporate social responsibility or ESG - they exist to solve real social and environmental problems, and that’s how they make their money. Impact technology companies are companies like AgroSmart, the largest Ag Tech data company in Latin America working to address climate change through transforming agriculture, or Seabound, which is building technology to capture carbon and other emission directly from tanker ships, or 360 Ed which is providing education to over a million kids in Myanmar and beyond at a time when a war has collapsed Myanmar's traditional education system. Even large companies like NVIDIA are now selling products that save the world - such as Earth-2, which is a digital twin of our planet that can run climate simulations providing essential information about weather, natural disasters, agriculture, and more.
To better understand the impact of technology companies and how they represent a new paradigm of business that is here to stay, we need to step back and see an even bigger change that has happened in our world. The Industrial Era - the one that started 300 years ago, is over and done with. I believe historians will look back and say it ended with the pandemic.
As the Industrial Era ended, it took with it a global economic paradigm grounded in building modern society on the exploitation of the planet’s natural resources and human labor. Going forward, we will no longer exploit people and the planet to achieve progress; instead, we will exploit technology. In the process, companies will make money by solving social and environmental problems and will treat their workers and customers with dignity, similar to partners or stakeholders in their work. While marrying purpose and profit has always been a dream for many over the last few decades, it wasn't until recently that technology became cheap enough, powerful enough, and scalable enough to make that dream a reality.
What does this transformation mean for you? At a personal level, it means that you can now find a job (or create a company) that is profitable and makes the world a better place. At a global level, it means the world now has an army of hundreds of thousands of companies working to solve our worst social and environmental problems, with both promising solutions and viable business models to do so.
