Introduction to the Summit

Day 1

We are living in a world where one of the most important things are mindsets, and what we get into our minds is changing our mindsets. As we are living in this time of turbulence, we must remember that the amygdala scans everything we see in negative terms, in order to survive; we pay 10 times more attention to the negative things. Thus, we pay 10 times more attention to negative news than to positive news, so there is a disproportion of negative news, but we are living in a world with massive solutions, that can give us both hope and a vision of a compelling future. (Peter Diamandis)

So far, in all human history we live in a world of scarcity, and we lived were the pie had to be sliced into thinner slices, but that is no longer the case. In the book abundance, this is very clear, right now the future is better than we think, because the exponential technologies are allowing us to make more abundance, so rather than cutting the slice thinner and thinner, we are building more pies.

We are creating more abundance of water (we can extract water from the atmosphere), we are creating more solar energy. There is nothing truly scarce, and when we live in a mindset of abundance, we can think of how we can all win, rather than how I can win, and you don’t. We have the access to technology, the capital to start solving problems.

For Salim Ismail, this is the best moment to be alive, but very few will argue that the world is better in so many levels, because we romanticize the past. But right now for the first time ever we have a vacation for survival, even though it is true that we do have a wider rich-poor gap, the middle class is expanding; we are living in a world of haves and super haves.

Salim Ismail

“Scarcity = Abundance -Trust”

  • an exoskeleton is a support structure for the body. ExO is a support structure for the world.
  • People would rather be comfortable than happy.
  • We need to move from the male (patriarchy, information wall-guarded, oil-based-world) to the female (distributive and abundant world, collaboration, nurturing, positive reimagining better world) archetypes.
  • “We have not civilized the world, we have materialized it." @Salim Ismail’s dad.
  • We’re either steering the world to a Mad Max or a Star Trek scenario.
  • We've printed $186 trillion worth of money [quantitative easing], to generate $46 trillion of GDP
  • https://www.welwaze.com/ - Celbrea TMD, FDA-approved and reportedly “better at detecting breast cancer than a mammogram
  • “The feedback loop” concept [anyone who heard more details, please elaborate]
  • If the top speed of the car had gone up the speed of Moore’s Law, today we would have a car capable of running faster than the speed of light.
  • I firmly believe we’re going to be hiring based on the alignment of company MTP and personal MTP

22 Solutions that can save the world

Peter Diamandis

  • Very interesting comments from Peter Diamandis as he speaks about now.
  • CNN - crisis news network/constant negativity network
  • “We live in a world of Abundance, but the rich do.. the poor still do not have water nor energy nor food. The Gap is large”
  • What makes this time amazing is that we do have access to exponential technologies, and single individuals are creating a worldwide impact
  • Want to become a billionaire, help a billion people.
  • The world’s biggest problems are the world’s biggest business opportunities.
  • Double something 10 times. It's 1000 times more double it 20 times, it's a million double it 30 times, it's a billion.
  • 30 exponential steps take you 26 times around the world. 30 linear steps take you in your backyard if you’re allowed outside (Salim).
  • Peter’s FutureLoop (AI curated news, beta on COVID-19): FutureLoop
  • Prediction challenge on COVIDs impact on Global GDP: https://futureloop.com/exo1
  • “I’m not worried about artificial intelligence, I’m worried about human stupidity”
  • Going forward, there are going to be only two types of businesses, those who use AI and those who are bankrupt
  • We’re going from evolution by natural selection (Darwinism) to evolution by human direction.
  • Is it going to be moral going forward to not genetically edit your kids if you can save them some suffering in the future?

We are extracting value from the earth what we are not considering the cost of the extraction. We need to re-engineer where we get our fish, rather than destinate the oceans, we should start growing the fish in labs, that test better is healthier, and don’t have any impacts on the oceans.

Exponential Challenges - Environment and Planetary Health

John Hagel

Co-Chairman, Deloitte Center for the Edge

“Zoom out / zoom in”

  • Two times horizons in parallel:
  • Zoom out: 10 - 20 years, sense of direction, where’s the big opportunity ahead.
  • Zoom in: 6 - 12 months: focus on what really matters in the short-term. What can we do now to accelerate our movement further towards broader impact / opportunity?
  • In times of mounting pressure, fear becomes the dominant emotion. Resist the temptation to shrink the time horizon.
  • Fear became a day to day emotion before COVID.
  • Fear / pressure / uncertainty drives short-term decisions and tends to push us to resist the temptation of imagining a different future
  • Over-time I’ve realized that psychology is almost more important than strategy (since humans are emotional beings first...and most CXOs are driven by fear and afraid to admit it)
  • Framework can be applied to both company & individual missions

Exponential Challenges - Prosperity and Economy

  • “How do we turn this fourth industrial revolution into a regenerative revolution.”
  • We are entering the 4th industrial revolution. There is a disconnect between political institutions and the mass population.
  • We have exceeded 4 of our 9 Planetary Boundaries: climate change, biodiversity loss, land system change, altered bio-chemical flows

David Attenborough

The problem with living in cities is that you’re cut off from the natural world. If you lose that sense of wonder, you’ve lost the most important thing in your life we are destroying our children's future.

Since 1970s, we lost 60% of vertebrate species, if we look at insects, we lost 80%

Jeff Booth

Book: http://thepriceoftomorrow.com/amazon/

  • We've printed $186 trillion worth of money over the past 20 years [quantitative easing], to generate $46 trillion of GDP growth
  • Deflationary abundance from technological development, e.g. cell phones, is staggering.
  • Given this increasing deflation, govts are creating a structural problem...if you’re destroying the value of cash, it's a mistake for a CEO to sit on cash so do dividends - the rich are getting richer because of govt printing cash
  • By deflating currencies, you have to spend a lot more to buy the same item ⇒  asset prices are artificially propped up (but net-net the value of everything is dropping)
  • Debt is created that can never be repaid
  • If you print money, that money has to “find a home”, e.g. real estate, so RE prices go up and its users (tenants) get killed because they can’t pay their rent
  • Jeff’s new book: https://www.amazon.com/Price-Tomorrow-Deflation-Abundant-Future/dp/1999257421
  • Some tech (eg. crypto-currency) will disrupt this & ultimately lead to an economic explosion. And COVID just accelerated it. Eg. Zoom
  • # Zoom users up from 10M → 200M users in a month. Not going to go back to 10 million after the Coronavirus. This delta & higher WFH is going to put a downward price on commercial real estate prices, which will lead to subprime crisis
  • Leads to more dislocation / inequality in society which will eventually lead to uprisings & wars and rise of dictators (causing a system reset)
  • Another path is to “let it fail” but that will cause a global depression (like 1930s) & can cause the banking system to collapse. Can policymakers stomach this?
  • Loss of trust in one’s currency might lead to possible pegging of some currencies to bitcoin or other similar crypto currencies

Global Supply Chain Strategist - Wolfgang_Lehmache Breaking the Global Economy

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

  • Unprecedented supply and demand shock already started in January
  • Took 50% capacity out of global air cargo market → drives higher prices
  • Irrational behavior of governments block flow of goods, medical equipment (that nations in lockdown need)
  • Smaller countries & those that have less diversified economies will hurt much more than larger countries with more diversification
  • Grocery business booming & high demand for anything tech
  • Industries with more fragmented & distributed supply chains will hurt more (eg Auto)

Rob Gonda (Societal Transformation: Present & future of Consumerism)

Rob Gonda

  • Consumer spend is 68% of US GDP & $45Tr globally...but do we really need all that?
  • Avg American home has >300,000 items
  • Is the environmental impact sustainable
  • Smart neuro-marketing are driving crazy demand (eg. toilet paper in covid)
  • Decision of what we consume will increasingly be made by our little pocket devices & AI...but it depends on what we train it to do -- optimize for essential needs & wellbeing OR optimize based on impulses??
  • The universe needs balance and equilibrium. We have the chance to think of this pandemic as a massive Reboot where we can rethink our needs & reshape habits

Reinvent medicine and democratize healthcare anywhere, anytime, when we visit hospitals we are back into the past, they have been practicing health in sylos.

  • It is really not healthcare but sickcare, its reactive not preventive

The potential for future medicine is to leverage technology to try to bring care any time anywhere with lower costs.

  • Optimize wellness
  • E-health is based on using your phone to help diagnose and treat illness
  • Better measurement, better diagnosis and better treatment.

Value-based healthcare: patient in the center

Education

  • Education will be personalized as is medicine
  • How fast can you learn something new?

Cognitive skills and metacognition

  • Screen smart program - 10K kids have gone through it & 85% of them exhibit better focus, self-regulation skills & developing far greater (70%) cognitive skills
  • Empathy is one of the skills we can help children build by having the kids be aware of what they are thinking and feeling while they are watching (social-emotional learning)

(What we are doing while annotating and transcribing and commenting the conference *is* metacognition: we are more engaged, and learn faster! -- David Orban)

Sonal Shah

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonal_Shah_(economist)

  • In US, states are being asked to take responsibilities for what the Federal govt should be coordinating (eg. states outbidding one another, and even within states cities competing VS a federally coordinated PPE group buying & allocation program)
  • This is a healthcare crisis that has triggered an economic crisis (very diff than 2008 which was a financial crisis)
  • So we have to focus on the health issues first...if done well, won't be as big a problem reopening the economy
  • On flip side, if there isn’t adequate testing & confidence building measures, folks won’t come back out of their homes
  • Going forward, we need to rethink how trade happens globally
  • Alternatives to very consolidated global supply chains
  • Rethink just-in-time supply chains (especially for health items & pandemics)
  • Use Defence Production Act to start producing in the US quickly
  • Three major changes we must think about
  • Income inequality (both within society & across countries)
  • Tech needs to be available for everybody (today not accessible to the poor...eg. low income h)
  • Couple million of US households don't have bank accounts (bcoz fees are too high) so are at the mercy of paycheck cashing

Paul Saffo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Saffo

  • City State concept is a new challenger in the 21st century as a dominant force (born out of the Information revolution) VS the Nation State (19th century born out of the industrial revolution)
  • Information technology has dissolved the monopoly power of the Nation State
  • City State is the perfect confluence of Commerce + Culture + Governance
  • In 2007 the Earth became a majority urban planet (most ppl now live in cities)
  • Small so every resident knows what they contribute & what they get back
  • Cities are about engagement & social cohesion
  • Not about your passport, about what each resident contributes, what they get back and what are the relationships?
  • Most imp diff is culture / social cohesion
  • In 20th century, Nation States cared about territory & physical resources (iron ore, oil etc)
  • In 21t century what matters is non-physical resources - human capital & making them work together efficiently (solidarity)...as Winston Churcill said “empires of the future will be empires of the mind”

(A great book about this is If Mayors Ruled The World -- David Orban)

Exponential Breakthroughs - Computation

Explaining Moore's Law

Neil Jacobstein

Divya Chander

  • Linkedin: /divyachander
  • Twitter: @dchander
  • Website: https://www.divyachander.com
  • Session focus:  how the ability to decipher the neural code has opened up new vistas on the ability to read and write to the brain.
  • When people think about reading-writing the code of life, they think of DNA / genetic manipulation.
  • Significant drops in the cost of genome sequencing, faster than Moore's Law. Made CRISPR possible, the ability to  use Cas9 to to search, find, and correct base pair misspellings in the genetic code that give rise to disease. Another version of the CRISPR enzyme, Cas 12, may provide sufficient search functions for things like viral RNA, so we can develop point of care tests for Covid-19! (See Sherlock and Mammoth Biosciences)
  • Neural code even more complex, need methods for mapping
  • Earliest -> neuroanatomy -> Ramon y Cajal from Madrid (1890-1900s)
  • Drawings of neurons from different parts of brain show relationship of form and function
  • Outcroppings, dendritic spines, input-output computing units
  • Brain still most efficient computer that we know of.
  • Computer -> tens of megawatts
  • Brain -> 20 W (enough to power a dim lightbulb)
  • Neuromorphic computing: attempts to emulate brain computing efficiency by building in silico building on neural form and function (Boahen Lab, Stanford; Intel Loihi Processor
  • Single cell recordings often invasive electrodes (can be optical). Non-invasive mind-reading tech includes EEG, fMRI, PET, NIRS (infrared). New tech - OpenWater (not yet released).
  • Brain mapping has clinical uses
  • Operating room to monitor level of conscoiusness, titrate drugs
  • Divya Chander developing platform for AI/neural signal processing in ICU to prevent neurocognitive decline. More pressing with Covid-19 admissions.
  • Brain mapping in visual system:
  • Enabled retina prostheses to be built: e.g. Shelia Nirenberg (Cornell) - in trials, E.J. Chilchilnisky (Stanford), Daniel Palanker (Stanford)
  • Nirenberg prosthesis uses optogenetics to stimulate the optic nerve (electrooptical brain machine interface)
  • Mind reading in visual system: Jack Gallant Lab, UC Berkeley
  • Speech mapping and reconstruction: Ed Chang Lab, UCSF
  • Brain mapping in motor system:
  • Utah array, 96 electrodes
  • Used by Braingate consortium: control actuators outside the paralyzed human using thoughts - robotic arms, mouse + keyboard to surf internet
  • Facebook interested in using brainwaves to control VR (FB acquired CTRL labs)
  • Elon Musk - Neuralink BMI company
  • Public announcement July, 2019: 96 thread array with 3,072 electrodes, low power consumption, USB C connector, “robotic neurosurgeon” for insertion of electrodes
  • Non-invasive technologies coming on line, and they can also write to the brain:
  • Focused ultrasound
  • Transcranial electrical stimulation
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation
  • Risks of reading brain: consent? Can be used against subject?
  • Risks of writing to brain:
  • Hacking the brain’s write function
  • Implanting false memories
  • Future directions: human augmentation through brain machine interfaces

  • Cost of reading human genome has gone down even more than it would have according to Moore’s Law / National Human Genome Institute
  • Biotech moonshots:
  • cellular agriculture → grow eggs, meat etc. outside of the organism by taking a small cell sample e.g. from a pig & make a “stem cell stake”, possibility of making lactose free foods etc.
  • human genetic engineering
  • Genes to knock out: HIV-resistance via CCR5 knockout, MSTN - lean muscle, APP - Alzheimer resistance, PCSK9 - lower coronary risk, FUT2 - stomach flu resistance, SLC30A8 - Type 2 Diabetes

Much of today was designed around centralized trust models - the future is decentralised.

Done from the bottom up

Blockchain = infrastructure level technology

Properties of blockchain:

  • Public to all users
  • Block-chains are immutable - can't delete transactions after they are made
  • It’s not centrally owned.. Even the creator cannot turn off the block-chain
  • They are decentralised.. A small piece is stored across devices across the planet

Block-chain removes the intermediaries

How would removing interdiaries impact your company/industry?

Session about Leadership Mindset in the 21st century with Simon Nopp

In order to be able to adopt and benefit from the challenges ahead of us we need to start with our Mindsets:

Future leaders need the following 4 mindsets:

Purpose-driven mindset:

A purpose-driven mindset is about understanding that bringing people together for a common cause has immense effects on engagement, satisfaction, productivity levels, impact, and motivation. A purpose-driven Mindset is about embracing Purpose in all your endeavors - acting, deciding, and leading with purpose. It is about aligning your entire organization and its' stakeholders with your purpose and creating additional value "

People empowerment mindset:

"The people empowerment mindset is about developing trust and letting go.

Leaders have to understand that their role is not to rise and shine anymore, but to empower and serve"

Technology mindset:

"The technology mindset is not necessarily about having programming or engineering skills. It is about understanding the implications of Technological Exponential growth, including technological changes in your strategic planning, and include "technological" thinking whenever you try to improve and transform your business"

Experimentation Mindset:

"The experimentation mindset is about understanding the need and value of experimentation and incorporating this mindset into your leadership activities. The experimentation mindset allows leaders and organizations to realize the benefits of the technology-, people empowerment-, and purpose-driven mindset.

It enables you to design innovations that generate a positive impact in the world through the passion and collaboration of people and the capabilities of emerging technologies"

Link for testing your experimentation processes/activities.

There is always a politician pretending to have the solutions for our problems, through identifying a scapegoat.
