Health in Latin America: Overcoming Challenges with Technology and Collaboration

Hugo Kantis, a specialist in the creation, strategy, and management of healthcare companies, emphasizes the importance of collaboration: "Latin America has immense potential to innovate in healthcare, but we need more collaboration between the different actors in the ecosystem. We must develop technologies and methods that adapt to our realities".

He believes that the training of specialized human resources is essential to address the current shortcomings of the health sector in Latin America; "training competent and committed professionals is essential."

Julio Casillas, Director of Funds, Entrepreneurship, and Technology-Based Companies of the Network of Technology Transfer Offices Mexico (Red OTT), considers it essential to create infrastructure to maximize the sector's innovation potential: "The healthcare ecosystem in Latin America is full of talent, but we lack adequate infrastructure to maximize its potential." He considers creating public-private alliances crucial, as "they can be a catalyst for developing more effective and accessible healthcare solutions."

For his part, Esteban Gorupicz, an experienced customer-centric technology leader and visionary entrepreneur, highlights the role of healthcare startups in the region. "Healthcare startups in Latin America demonstrate that we can lead in innovation and create scalable solutions." Success stories in this regard are becoming more common, but support for healthcare entrepreneurs remains crucial, as they "must go beyond funding; we need mentors, networks, and access to markets."

 Eric Cardeña, an enthusiastic entrepreneur and expert in startup incubation and acceleration, says that "collaboration between entrepreneurs and mentors is essential for the growth and success of healthcare startups in the region" and can make all the difference, especially in the early stages of development. "It's easier to get mentorship than direct funding; leveraging this help can make all the difference." He notes that building strong and lasting relationships is essential for the sector's sustainable development, so "we must focus on building lasting relationships and not just transactions in the healthcare ecosystem."

Alex Santana, another prominent entrepreneur, highlights the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and data analysis in healthcare, which "is enormous, especially in a region as diverse as Latin America." He believes that technology can transform the way diagnoses are made and mentions that telemedicine is an area with great potential. "Telemedicine is revolutionizing access to healthcare services, but we still face infrastructure and connectivity challenges," as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, when its use increased by 200% in some countries in the region. All that remains is addressing connectivity gaps and ensuring that all patients benefit from these advances.

Alex also highlights the importance of technological solutions in healthcare that "be inclusive and consider the diverse socioeconomic realities of our region," and that governments play an active role in promoting and regulating new healthcare technologies.

Given these criteria, the economic impact of an advanced health sector should not be underestimated. Technological innovations in health can generate jobs, attract investment, and improve the overall productivity of the region. The infrastructure problem is indeed persistent, but the solution lies in encouraging the development of startups and technology companies that can provide innovative solutions.

Public-private collaboration not only facilitates the financing and development of new technologies but also allows for a broader and more equitable implementation of health services. Collaboration between countries can accelerate progress in health by fostering the exchange of knowledge and experience. The need for local solutions resonates with the urgency of adapting innovations to the cultural and economic specificities of the region, so creating a strong and empathetic network is critical for any health entrepreneur who wants to make a real impact.
